What is (atopic) eczema?

(Atopic) Eczema is a condition in which the skin becomes chronically inflamed. Consequently it appears red, blistered, cracked, and may be oozing yellow or red fluid. It can be extremely itchy. Children, in particular, tend to scratch until the skin bleeds.

Medically, (atopic) eczema is part of a group of conditions linked to inherited allergy (atopy). This is why a child with eczema often has a parent with hay fever or asthma, or vice versa.

Conventional treatment

Steroid creams are often the last resource and bring relief to most. They act by suppressing the inflammation of the skin. They do not cure or address the reason why the skin is inflamed, but just superficially prevent inflammation. This is why the condition usually returns when the cream is not used. In addition, steroid creams have side-effects when used over long periods such as irreversible thinning of the skin.

Homeopathy for the symptoms of eczema

Homeopathy addresses the reason why the skin becomes inflamed in the first place. It tries to restore the balance from the inside out by removing the need to produce inflamed skin.

In my experience, homeopathy is very effective for the symptoms of eczema. In my own practice, I take a slow and gentle approach, so that steroid creams may be removed gradually over the course of three months and subsequent healing of the skin symptoms may take place. The method of homeopathy I employ for eczema symptoms dramatically reduce the risk of initial aggravation so commonly experienced when natural methods are tried. Instead, a gradual improvement may be observed.

The therapy includes a first appointment lasting up to 2 hrs. There are no physical examinations, but I will guide the patient through a set of questions to establish all individual factors in the case. Details such as inherited tendencies, likes and dislikes as well as possible triggers of diet or environment are all important pieces of information that lead me to choose the most appropriate remedy. The remedy will be sent by post with instructions on how to take it. For eczema it is important to come for regular follow-up appoinments on a monthly basis, with (free-of-charge) weekly telephone check-ups in between.

An eczema story

Rosie (3) was brought to me with eczema covering her wrists. This had occasionally been treated with hydrocortisone cream, but very sparingly only. The redness and itchiness got much worse after bathing and in particular after visits to the swimming pool. In taking her case I found a family disposition to allergy. In addition, Rosie’s mother had suffered from poor immunity with constant colds during her pregnancy with Rosie. Considering these factors, I chose a single homeopathic remedy in liquid from to be given daily. I also recommended installing a whole-house water filter to remove chlorine from bathing and drinking water as in this case I considered the chlorine to be a major trigger for bringing on the redness and itching. Rosie's symptoms completely cleared within 6 months and so far there has been no relapse.
