Anxiety, Fears and Phobias Anxiety and fear are all part of life and have an important role to play. This is to warn us of danger and prepare us for difficulty ahead. A person who never experiences fear may come to great harm as they do not have an inbuilt alert button to make them slow down and assess a situation before they get into it. On the other hand, a life ruled by fear can become limiting as we begin avoiding those situations that are causing us to be afraid. Unfortunately for some, avoiding a certain situation may only stop the anxiety for a while. Soon, anxiety may shift from one issue to the next, as if it were inbuilt in the system and needed to find a way to express itself, no matter how much we tried to escape it. Anxiety is very physical... Anxiety seen this way is a frame of mind, but for many people its expression is very physical indeed! Hot flushes, trembling, fainting, a sense of foreboding, muscular or mental paralysis, weakness, inability to think and speak coherently may all be consequences of feeling overwhelmingly anxious. The 21st century is turning out to be a challenge... Unfortunately, it seems that the 21st century is turning out
to challenge our security and survival on a global scale. Political events of
the past years, economic disasters of the past months and health threats of
the last weeks play their part in making us feel out of control. Whether you
are finding yourself worrying about swine flu or terrorist attacks, financial
ruin or loss of position, these are all very real threats that may have a
negative impact on your quality of life. But our lives must go on as we all have responsibilities and duties towards friends and relatives. And with all its instability and insecurity ours is still a beautiful world and so it is essential to address our fears in order to enjoy the good things in live. |
