New Year Detox

Yes, another detox plan, but a special one!

This detox plan helps your metabolism to return to the state it is genetically meant to be in. Sluggishness, weight gain, premature aging, lack of energy, and chronic metabolic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure may in a major way be due to our modern diet which has transgressed from what may have kept our ancestors slim and trim.

The principles of this detox based on our suspected prehistoric diet are simple.

1. Eat more meat & fish

Eat lean meat, fish or eggs three times a day, especially for breakfast. Make sure you eat enough in one serving, because animal protein may prevent sugar cravings.

(Bacon, ham and fatty meat in general are not recommended.)

2. Eat more vegetables

Lunch and dinner should consist of 75% vegetables (+ 25% meat or fish). You can choose any type you like, best is a mix of 3-5 varieties. Steaming or stir-frying is best to keep the nutrient content high. To make the meal tasty use onions, garlic, ginger and herbs and spices. Use salt sparingly.

3. Eat more fruit

Fruit contains natural vitamins, minerals, fibre and disease fighting phytochemicals. In this detox plan you can eat as much fruit as you like at mealtimes and in between.

I recommend a plate of fresh fruit + 1 serving of steamed salmon for breakfast.

4. Use olive oil

Use only organic extra virgin olive oil for cooking or in dressings. All other fats are unhealthy and may contribute to major problems such as heart disease and diabetes.

5. Exclude all grain products

This is the most important rule you must keep in order to maximise results from this detox. Grain products such as bread, pasta, rice, biscuits, cakes etc may slow down your metabolism and may cause blood sugar balance problems, in turn being responsible for sugar cravings and weight gain.

As long as you eat enough meat, fish, eggs and vegetables and fruit you will probably not feel hungry. You may experience withdrawal symptoms when you first exclude grain products. But after 2 – 3 days you may notice a very positive change in your well-being.

6. Exclude all dairy

Dairy products are high in fat and low in nutrients except calcium. You can temporarily get enough calcium form the high vegetable content of this diet. Dairy may cause poor absorption of nutrients and this may have a variety of knock-on problems such as cravings and weight gain.

7. Coffee, tea & alcohol

Have no more than 1 coffee or 1 ordinary tea per day, as well as no more than one glass of wine every other day.  Have green tea and herbal teas instead and drink up to 2 litres of water per day.

For true chocoholics:  I know a special chocolate produced by PLAMIL which is sugar and dairy free and still tastes good enough. You can order this at www.plamilfoods.co.uk.

8. 85%

As long as you stick to this programme 85% * of the time, you may get the full benefit.

* 85% means that you can have three meals a week off the programme!!!

Please note:

This detox plan may only only work if you eat 75% vegetables and fruit. Consuming meat/fish/eggs three times a day without balancing it with vegetables and fruit would be dangerous in the long run.

Enjoy your detox, and let me know how you found it….
